Sally walked to the shack. Locks lined the door. Something shuffled and chains clanked inside. She drew a steadying breath. โEddie. Iโm back.โ
The shuffling behind the door stopped.
โI know, Iโm late,โ she admitted. โScavenging got crazy.โ She forced a laugh. โNothing I couldnโt handle.โ She began unlocking the door, continuing to talk. She undid the last padlock and cracked the door to peer inside.
Dried blood covered the zombieโs face. Chains bound its arms and legs.
Sally opened the door a few inches more and threw a piece of meat inside. The zombie snatched it up and shoved it into its mouth. Sallyโs smile wavered as she watched.
โI better get inside. Iโll see you tomorrow.โ She paused. โI love you.โ
The zombie paid her no heed, too consumed by its hunger for flesh.
Sally locked the shack and hurried to the house. Inside, she barricaded the door then checked all windows. Secured, she trudged to bed.
Why did she persist? Eddie was gone. That was a monster with his face. The right thing would be a bullet to the brain. But she couldnโt. Not to the man she loved.
Tears pooled in her eyes. โIโm sorry, Eddie.โ

Nice story! Kinda sad but shows dedication to the oaths taken.
I love this! It reminds me of the bit in Shaun of the Dead where thereโs a woman being interviewed on daytime TV after life settles into a new normal and sheโs on there because her family are hosting an intervention as she wonโt โbreak upโ with her husband who turned into a zombie. Great bit of flash fiction. ๐
