Sally walked to the shack. Locks lined the door. Something shuffled and chains clanked inside. She drew a steadying breath. βEddie. Iβm back.β
The shuffling behind the door stopped.
βI know, Iβm late,β she admitted. βScavenging got crazy.β She forced a laugh. βNothing I couldnβt handle.β She began unlocking the door, continuing to talk. She undid the last padlock and cracked the door to peer inside.
Dried blood covered the zombieβs face. Chains bound its arms and legs.
Sally opened the door a few inches more and threw a piece of meat inside. The zombie snatched it up and shoved it into its mouth. Sallyβs smile wavered as she watched.
βI better get inside. Iβll see you tomorrow.β She paused. βI love you.β
The zombie paid her no heed, too consumed by its hunger for flesh.
Sally locked the shack and hurried to the house. Inside, she barricaded the door then checked all windows. Secured, she trudged to bed.
Why did she persist? Eddie was gone. That was a monster with his face. The right thing would be a bullet to the brain. But she couldnβt. Not to the man she loved.
Tears pooled in her eyes. βIβm sorry, Eddie.β

Nice story! Kinda sad but shows dedication to the oaths taken.
I love this! It reminds me of the bit in Shaun of the Dead where thereβs a woman being interviewed on daytime TV after life settles into a new normal and sheβs on there because her family are hosting an intervention as she wonβt βbreak upβ with her husband who turned into a zombie. Great bit of flash fiction. π
