I love this story! I love the compassion within it, as the parents try to teach their children, and the cat lady has more going on than it seems from the outset. :)
It also reminded me vaguely of a story I read long ago in a Sword and Sorceress anthology, about a woman who adopted all the orphaned familiars of other witches and wizards... I don't even remember what that story was called, but there are nuances here that reminded me of it. I love it when I read a story that reminds me of another because I think all stories have connections.
That’s such a sweet story. And the twist is so matter-of-factly delivered, it gave me chills. Also, I’m really intrigued by this cat lady now, sounds like she has a great back story.
