The kids called her the crazy cat lady. She smells like pee. Her clothes are covered in hair. Sheβs weird.
Their parents chided them to be kind. Maybe she has reasons for being that way. But the kids refused to listen.
Not that she minded. Could call her whatever. Just leave her and her cats be.
As she filled food bowls one morning, she noticed a new cat huddled underneath some rose bushes, trembling. She knew that look well. It spoke of a hard life and a yearning for peace.
Retrieving another food bowl, she set the dish at the porch edge and retreated. Getting too close would only stress the newcomer more. Instead, she went inside.
βYes, we have a new pack member,β she informed the cats as she settled down in her recliner.
It didnβt take long. The new cat seemed to knowβas had the others who joined her. They understood she was a safe haven for the cast-outs, the ones stripped of their shifting ability. She didnβt ask what crimes they committed. She accepted them because no one had when it happened to her, and she was determined not to let another suffer as she had.

Thatβs such a sweet story. And the twist is so matter-of-factly delivered, it gave me chills. Also, Iβm really intrigued by this cat lady now, sounds like she has a great back story.
I love this story! I love the compassion within it, as the parents try to teach their children, and the cat lady has more going on than it seems from the outset. :)
It also reminded me vaguely of a story I read long ago in a Sword and Sorceress anthology, about a woman who adopted all the orphaned familiars of other witches and wizards... I don't even remember what that story was called, but there are nuances here that reminded me of it. I love it when I read a story that reminds me of another because I think all stories have connections.
