The creature clawed its way on shore. Scales covered its hulking body. Milky white eyes blinked against the light. The nose was two slits in its face above a wide, thick-lipped mouth. It had webbed ears and hands. It reached for me.
A scream worthy of a 1950s horror movie burst from me. I scrambled back, stumbling over the uneven and wet ground.
The creature moaned again. It clambered to its feet.
“Stay back.” I grabbed a rock and chucked it at the creature. It sailed past its head. I cursed myself for quitting softball as a kid. Turning heel, I ran.
The creature followed, gaining ground quickly. Icy hands grabbed me and hauled me off my feet. I screamed again.
This was supposed to be a romantic evening with my boyfriend. He had invited me to the lagoon to show me something special. Now I was going to die. Was he going to find my mangled body? I sobbed.
The creature pinned me down. It cocked its head slightly. Behind it, the full moon ringed its head like a halo. It opened its mouth and revealed rows of sharp teeth. Then, it spoke. What it said horrified me.
“Cindy.”
