GO UP
A Science Fiction Fantasy Flash Fiction Story inspired by The Last of Us.
Go up.
The thought penetrated Joseph’s skull like a hammer. Repeating over and over.
Go up.
GO UP!
His body jerked as he took a step. His knees popped and crackled as if they didn’t want to obey. His feet dragged. His eyes rolled in his skull. A gurgle rumbled in his throat.
Go up.
Why was his body so resistant to the command? He tried to recall, but each thought felt like a knife being slammed into his brain. It was much easier to not think. Why not just listen and obey?
Go up.
He staggered toward the building and inside. To the right were stairs. He automatically headed to them. “Sir. you can’t go up there,” a voice called but he ignored it. He grasped the rail and pulled himself up, forcing his rebelling feet to climb. At the top, the fire alarm blared as he pushed through the door leading to the roof.
He walked to the edge of the building. Below him, people looked like ants. The pain exploded as a long stem burst from his skull. A bulb opened, spores pouring out of it and floating onto the people. He collapsed, the parasite’s job done.
