I stared at the coffin as it was slowly lowered into the grave. Around me, my family and friends cried softly. The priest spoke solemn words, but I barely heard him over the beating of my heart.
This wasnโt how it was supposed to end.
Tears threatened. I closed my eyes to hold them back. I refused to cry. He wouldnโt want it.
But what else could I do?
My love had been torn away in the most brutal manner. Murdered by a shadowy monster. Police had barely been able to ID him.
The priest finished and stepped back. Graveyard workers moved in to start shoveling the dirt. Friends began to disperse then family. Soon, I was alone, watching the dirt fill the hole.
If only it could fill the hole now in my heart.
The workers finished shoveling and now laid fresh sod over the grave. Lastly, they put a metal cage and drove it into the ground. A muffled howl came from under the earth.
My tears broke free. My love was gone. In his place was a monster that, if allowed, would rise and destroy everything. I would not allow that. I would be its sole victim.
