In a world that never shut up, he was punished to silence for a sin he didn’t commit.
It had started innocently. There was a girl. She beckoned with a finger pressed to her lips. She promised no one would know. He was smitten and followed blindly.
This was heaven for sure.
Then the door banged open. A man stormed in. She looked from the man to him, her face pale. Throwing herself into the man’s arms, she sobbed, “Daddy, he hurt me.”
“No! I’d never!”
But his words fell on deaf ears.
Punishment was swift. In the pack, there was only one outcome: banishment. But before he was cast out, they cut off his tongue for the truth they believed was a lie.
Alone, he huddled in the dark city streets. He longed for death, but couldn’t bring himself to do it. Often he found himself at the zoo, walking among the caged animals. He imagined they understood the prison he was in, but he didn’t dare reach out for fear of rejection.
Then one night, he heard a howl. It came from the wolves in the zoo. They were calling to him, asking, “Brother, will you join us?”
