They were the underdogs in the shifter population. Everyone knew about werewolves and werecats. Some even knew of weredragons (which weren’t really dragons as those don’t exist, but let’s not get hung up on technicalities.) But the other creatures were lesser known. Not as glamorous or sexy in the eyes of normies.
“Who’d want to turn into an otter?” they’d laugh.
Like a shifter got to choose which animal they turned into. Being a shifter wasn’t magic or a curse. It was DNA pure and simple. What animal DNA did you have? What was spliced into you by a crazy scientist?
It was illegal now to splice people with animals. Unethical experts declared. But there was no undoing it so they had to accept their fate. Their offspring inherited their mixed genes. At first, there was fear. Were they more animal than human? Over time, with regulations, everyone became accustom to the shifters.
It was normal. Mundane.
At least if you were one of the cool ones. The others still struggle for recognition and reparations for what was done to them against their will. Will they get it? Well, that’s why I fight for them. The underdogs need a hero.
