A MYSTERY HIDDEN IN THE DEPTHS OF THE GREAT LAKES
There are many mysteries hiding in the depths of the Great Lakes. Shipwrecks from every century. A 1910 Locomotive Steam Engine. The Largest Unmodified Collection of Nash Automobiles in the World. World War II Fighter Planes.
And Stonehenge.
Found in 2007, a series of stones were found approximately 40 feet below the surface in the water of Grand Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan. They were arranged in a circular pattern which suggested they were man-made. There are two circles. The outer has a diameter of 40 feet and the inner has one of 20 feet. They are made of granite, which is locally found. Dating suggested they were placed around 10,000 years ago, giving them the distinction of being the oldest structure discovered in North America! Go Michigan!
HOW DID THESE STONES GET 40 FEET UNDERWATER IN LAKE MICHIGAN?
That’s not as big of a mystery as one might believe. The Great Lakes formed around 3,000 years ago. If the date of the stones is correct it is most likely that the stones were placed on what was the shoreline of Michigan at the time. Rising water levels as glaciers melted covered them as the Great Lakes formed into what we know and love today.
But why the indigenous people of the area placed the stones is still a mystery. As with many strange and unusual discoveries, more research is needed to find the answers. I, for one, am looking forward to them being revealed.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU THINK IS HIDING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE GREAT LAKES?
What do you think these stones are?
My next email will drop into your inbox on August 28th. Keep your eyes peeled because I’m sharing a drawing of one of the cutest creatures on the face of the planet!
